Ajit did his schooling from his native state of Assam and undergraduate studies from University of Kolkata in Chemistry. He then moved into the field of biology and obtained his M.Sc. from the School of Life Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and Ph.D. from Jadavpur University (Bose Institute), Kolkata in the field of Biochemistry and Biophysics. Based on his research work during Ph.D. , Ajit was awarded with the INSA Young Scientist Award in 2006. Soon after his Ph.D., Ajit moved to EMBL Hamburg Outstation, Germany as a UNESCO-TWAS and EMBL visiting fellow to gain expertise in various aspects of protein structure determination using macromolecular crystallography and synchrotron radiation. Ajit continued with his research career in structural biology as a post-doctoral fellow in Cornell University, New York and as a HHMI Research Associate in the department of biophysical chemistry, Johns Hopkins University School of medicine, Baltimore. While working in Johns Hopkins, Ajit developed interest in different pathways and mechanisms of protein modification by ubiquitin and ubiquitin like proteins. Ajit joined Bose Institute as an independent researcher in early 2011 and continues to work in the field of ubiquitination.
