My career through post graduation at GNEC, MAMC, Delhi under Dr JC Das gave me adequate exposure to glaucoma, which I found to be a very fascinating disease yet frustrating in terms of increased associated morbidity and irreversible blindness. The constant reference and discussion with patients on its permanency of damage intrigued me to explore what makes the human optic nerve susceptible to injury in pseudoexfoliation. That path later led me into joining as research associate at the prestigious Dr R.P centre, AIIMS under Dr R. Sihota and later to LV Prasad Eye Institute as glaucoma clinical fellow under Dr G Chandrashekhar where I fine tuned my clinical skills and embarked on independent projects in glaucoma. My interest in pseudoexfoliation grew over these years due to its unique identity in ophthalmology and mysterious features which evaded any scientific explanation. I however realised that I need to understand basic research methods to be able to interpret results of current studies and to explore newer questions that arose from my previous projects. Now, I have embarked on a research journey with a PhD and basic research in glaucoma which is purely new to true bred clinicians which I believe will finally help me find ways where I can finally say to my patients 'yes, there is a cure and this can be reversed (to some/full extent)" rather than delivering the death (or blindness) sentence to patients afflicted with the disease.
