My passion to become a researcher initiated during my undergraduate studies, where I was very fortunate to get educated by research oriented teachers who, I believe, have inculcated the basics of science in me. During this time, I broadened my knowledge in various aspects of science, particularly in the field of cancer biology. I realized that the discoveries in cell biology have led to the identification of several genes and their regulatory mechanisms that are involved in the development of malignancies. However, these advancements have not translated into the successful therapy against progressive cancers. In the direction of understanding the cellular biology of cancer, I joined one of the top ranked research institutes in India, National Center for Cell Science (NCCS), Pune with Dr. Bhat to undertake PhD studies and to become proficient in cancer research. As a postdoctoral fellow at Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, with Prof. Chellappan, I initiated research in the challenging field of cancer stem cell biology with a team of experts from interdisciplinary fields like medicine, bioinformatics and proteomics. This has allowed me to directly correlate the patho-physiological complications of cancer and its associated molecular mechanisms. As we all know that intratumoral heterogeneity has emerged as major constraint for targeted therapy against cancers. I believe that understanding the genotypic and phenotypic diversity among stem-like cancer cells, would be the possible explanation for this complex behavior and vital for complete remission of cancer with no recurrence. To address these questions, I have been provided the opportunity to be an independent investigator at National Institute of Biomedical Genomics (NIBMG).
